TRCN inducts 624 education graduates, urges teachers to adopt digital tools

NOA campaigns against insecurity in Bayelsa Nathan Tamarapreye, Yenagoa The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Bayelsa on Friday commenced a robust campaign by critical stakeholders against insecurity and challenges to unity facing the nation. The State Director of NOA in Bayelsa, Mrs Grace Olobio, made this known during a one-day round table conference held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Federal Secretariat complex in Yenagoa. The conference had the theme, “Pathway to National Cohesion, Development and Unity.” The NOA State Director was represented by the Deputy Director, Programmes, Mrs Ndidiamaka Mumeya-Francis. She noted that issues of insurgency, banditry, extremism, youth restiveness, herder-farmer conflicts, militancy, kidnapping, pipeline vandalism, among others, are major challenges confronting the nation and need to be addressed and tackled by all citizens. She urged people to always be vigilant and to report criminality and infractions of the law to security agencies, noting that the pathway to National development requires everyone to join the campaign to protect the country's wealth from criminal syndicates who drain its natural resources and damage the environment. The Director of a Non-Governmental Organisation, Peace Building, Conflict Resolution Trainers Network, Dr. Dotimi Ogbofa, spoke on the negative impacts of oil production and spillage in the various communities. Ogboga identified greed on the part of some traditional leaders for the unemployment and underdevelopment bedevilling most oil-rich communities. In their goodwill messages, the Bayelsa State Coordinator National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, Mr Nwankwala Stalin and the representative from the National Council for Women Society, Mrs Nyanayo Maggi and that of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Mr Oguntuase A, commended NOA for the effort. They pledged to collaborate with the agency to ensure the campaign gets to people living in the communities, as the program would be replicated in the eight local government areas of the state.

The Registrar/Chief Executive of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Dr. Ronke Soyombo, has urged teachers to be tech-savvy and adopt digital tools in teaching to become globally competent.

Soyombo stated this on Friday in Uyo during the 14th induction ceremony of 624 education graduates of the University of Uyo as teachers into the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria.

The Registrar, who was represented by Dr Jacinta Ezeahurukwe, Director, Regulation, Accreditation and Enforcement, at the ceremony, said the future of education is digital; as such, there is a need to embrace technology, and called for innovation and creativity in teaching.

“Teaching should be accorded its exotic rightful place of prominence through inculcation of best practices, which this induction is meant to promote.

“This can be achieved by being innovative and creative in our teaching, seeking new approaches, walking the talk of our professional creed, providing new technologies and methodologies that will engage your students, foster critical thinking and promote lifelong learning.

“The future of education is digital, so the 21st-century teachers must be tech-savvy, flexible and globally competent. We need to emphasise and embrace the power of digital tools and adapt them to enhance our teaching,” she stated.

While speaking, the Vice Chancellor, University of Uyo, Prof. Nyaudoh Ndaeyo, said the occasion was monumental as the institution was inducting the highest number of teachers in its history, and commended the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria for upholding standards and improving the teaching profession.

“As a university noted for standards, we will continue to provide a conducive environment for learning and uphold the highest standards of education in our nation.

“The contributions and regulation by the TRCN have been very remarkable in standardising, streamlining the activities of educators and improving the practice of teachers within the profession in the country,” the VC stated.

On her part, the Dean, Faculty of Education, Prof Ime E. Emah said the 14th batch of 624 teachers was made up of holders of the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D), Master’s, and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) and Bachelor of Education in various disciplines.

Emah challenged the inductees to make a difference wherever they go, serve with passion and commitment, and be responsible professionals.

“Therefore, I challenge the inductees that as you are going to be formally immersed in this noble profession today, you should endeavour to make a difference in the respective organisations that you may find yourselves.

“Be ready to serve with passion, commitment and responsibility as worthy professionals and ambassadors of the University of Uyo. Remember that Uniuyo is a brand. Please protect it in your daily practices,” she stated.
