The Chairman of Imota Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Benson Sunday Ayodele, has convened a strategic meeting with leaders of the Hausa and Fulani communities to strengthen security and sustain peaceful coexistence within the council area.
The high-level stakeholders’ meeting, held at the council secretariat on Wednesday, brought together key leaders of northern resident communities to discuss measures to enhance community vigilance, promote harmony, and prevent security threats.
Speaking at the meeting, Ayodele stressed that maintaining security is a shared responsibility that requires the active participation of all residents, irrespective of their ethnic or regional backgrounds.
He urged the Hausa and Fulani leadership to strengthen internal monitoring structures and sensitise their members, particularly new arrivals, on the customs, laws and peaceful traditions of the Imota community.
“Imota has always been a peaceful and hospitable home for all law-abiding Nigerians. To sustain this, community leaders must serve as anchors of stability. You must know your members, monitor their activities and continually promote peace and security awareness,” the chairman said.
According to him, proactive engagement and community education are essential to preventing misunderstandings, discouraging criminal infiltration and safeguarding the area from elements capable of disrupting public order.
Responding on behalf of the northern communities, the Seriki Hausa of Imota LCDA, Mallam Ibrahim Bala, commended the council chairman and his administration for their inclusive approach to governance and commitment to the welfare and security of all residents.
Bala reaffirmed the commitment of the Hausa and Fulani communities to the peace, security and economic development of Imota, describing the area as their home.
He pledged to relay the chairman’s message to members of the communities and ensure that they remain law-abiding residents who contribute positively to the growth and stability of the council area.
The meeting ended with a series of resolutions, including a commitment to regular inter-community dialogue and periodic internal meetings by northern community leaders to educate members on the importance of law and order, the dangers of spreading unverified information, and the need to respect local institutions and traditional structures.
Participants also agreed that new migrants settling within the communities should be properly identified by their leaders to prevent criminal elements from exploiting trade and labour activities as cover. In addition, a direct communication channel will be established among community leaders, the local council administration and security agencies to facilitate the prompt reporting of suspicious activities.
Among the senior council officials present were the Vice Chairman of Imota LCDA, Princess Abisoye Omowunmi Jimoh, and the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Mohammed Fagbesan.
The council’s legislative arm was well represented at the meeting by its principal officers, including the Leader of the House, Hon. Oluwole Adeshina; Deputy Leader, Hon. Sunday Aberuagba; Majority Leader, Hon. Jelili Busayo; and Chief Whip, Hon. Saidat Orewale.
