The Federal Road Safety Corps has deployed 720 personnel across major highways in Akwa Ibom State ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration as part of intensified efforts to prevent crashes, ease traffic congestion and tackle reckless driving.

The Sector Commander, Felicia Kalu, disclosed this in a statement issued in Uyo on Tuesday, warning motorists against dangerous practices capable of causing gridlock and fatal accidents during the festive period.

Kalu said the deployment included Special Marshals, patrol vehicles, ambulances and a tow truck strategically positioned to manage traffic flow, respond to emergencies and remove obstructions from the roads.

She expressed concern over the increasing rate of wrong-way driving and other traffic violations on major roads in the state, describing them as serious threats to both motorists and pedestrians.

According to her, the command will combine aggressive enforcement with public enlightenment campaigns to ensure safer roads throughout the celebrations.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Everyone must align with the Safe System Approach, which seeks to ensure a safe transportation system for all categories of road users,” she said.

The sector commander warned that offenders caught driving against traffic, speeding, overloading vehicles, driving dangerously or using mobile phones while driving would be arrested and prosecuted.

She urged motorists and commuters to comply with traffic regulations and promptly report crashes, broken-down vehicles and other emergencies through the FRSC toll-free emergency line, 122.
