A landslide triggered by hours of heavy rainfall has caused part of a hospital building in Calabar, Cross River State, to collapse.

The affected facility, identified as UNICEM Hospital, reportedly gave way on Thursday, August 13, after torrential rain destabilised the hillside around the structure.

Videos shared on social media showed a section of the hospital collapsing as residents watched from a safe distance. A Calabar-based pharmacist, Mekzy, who posted one of the videos on X, said the collapse followed a landslide caused by the downpour.

Images from the scene showed a large volume of earth sliding into the hospital compound before sections of the building collapsed, scattering concrete debris and exposing reinforcement rods.

The extent of the damage was unclear, while there was no official confirmation of deaths or injuries as of Friday. It was also not immediately known whether anyone was trapped in the building.

The incident has renewed concerns over construction on unstable terrain in Calabar, particularly as heavy rainfall during the rainy season increases the risk of landslides and erosion.

Neither the Cross River State Government nor the relevant emergency management authorities had issued a detailed statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
