The Energy and Maritime Reporters of Nigeria (EMR), Akwa Ibom State Branch, had its maiden meeting, pledging to promote transparency, sustainable development, and stronger stakeholder engagement in Nigeria’s energy and maritime sectors.
At the meeting on Saturday morning, 16 May 2026, moderated by the National Chairman, Comrade Martins Giadom, members reaffirmed their commitment to professional, investigative, and solution-driven journalism aimed at deepening public understanding of issues in the oil, gas, energy, and maritime industries.
They resolved to spotlight key challenges, including accountability, safety standards, environmental sustainability, inclusive economic growth, and the Federal Government’s Ease of Doing Business agenda.
The group also pledged to strengthen partnerships with International Oil Companies, host communities, labour unions, government agencies, and development partners. Key stakeholders identified include Eastern Ports, terminal operators, Mobil, Agip, Renaissance, HYPREP, OGFZA, the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, and public-private initiatives such as NDORAMA and NLNG.
Members further agreed to advocate greater media participation in policy dialogues and industry conferences, organise regular training programmes to enhance digital and technical reporting skills, and uphold ethics, fact-checking, and professionalism across all chapters.
They also called on organisers of energy and maritime events in Akwa Ibom and the Niger Delta to actively involve local journalists in order to strengthen community-based reporting and regional development. The meeting ended with a firm pledge to uphold responsible journalism and contribute meaningfully to the growth, competitiveness, and socio-economic advancement of Nigeria’s energy and maritime industries.
