The Chairman of Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, Aniefiok Nkom, has warned residents against dumping refuse into drainage channels, saying the practice is a major cause of blocked gutters, flooding and the destruction of lives and property.

Nkom gave the warning on Monday during the July edition of the council’s Monthly Covenant Service, themed “There Shall Be No Adversary,” drawn from 1 Kings 5:2–5, at the Ikot Ekpene Council Hall.

He said his administration had consistently undertaken the desilting of drainage channels across the local government to ensure the free flow of water and reduce the risk of flooding and other environmental hazards.

The council chairman appealed to residents to complement the government’s efforts by disposing of waste responsibly rather than clogging drainage systems.

“I want to appeal to our people to stop dumping refuse into gutters. My administration cannot continue to desilt drainages while some residents deliberately block them with waste. Let us all play our part in keeping the area clean,” he said.

Nkom also urged eligible residents to participate in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He said the council had collaborated with INEC to make the exercise more accessible by providing ward-based registration centres, enabling more residents to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

The chairman described voter registration as a civic responsibility and encouraged all eligible citizens who were yet to register or update their details to take advantage of the exercise.

He further appealed to residents to continue praying for leaders at all levels of government, particularly those responsible for policy formulation and implementation, while seeking divine guidance for the success of the council’s empowerment initiatives.

“Continue to pray for our leaders and for the success of every entrepreneurship programme we have initiated. Our commitment is to ensure that every ward and every village benefits from government interventions that will positively impact the lives of our people,” he said.

Nkom also announced that the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) would soon establish a study centre in Ikot Ekpene.

According to him, the new study centre will expand access to higher education and reduce the difficulties faced by many prospective students who previously had to travel long distances or abandon their academic pursuits due to the absence of a nearby learning facility.

Delivering the sermon, Pastor Victor Ukoabasi described an adversary as any person or circumstance that deprives others of peace, progress and fulfilment.

He said acts of wickedness often hinder the growth of individuals, families and society, urging Christians to shun evil, remain obedient to God’s word, dwell continually in His presence and seek His guidance and protection in all circumstances.

The monthly covenant service was attended by council officials, political stakeholders, religious leaders and residents, who offered prayers for peace, development and continued progress in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.

The Media Unit of the Office of the Chairman, Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, disclosed the development in a statement issued to journalists on Monday, July 13, 2026.
