The newly elected Chairman of the Nigeria Automobile Technicians Association (NATA) in Bayelsa State, Mr Peter Omavie, has pledged to deploy digital diagnostic tools to enhance efficiency and modernise the sector.

Speaking to journalists in Yenagoa after the association’s election, Omavie unveiled a three-point agenda centred on technology, collaboration and welfare, aimed at repositioning automobile technicians for the evolving digital economy.

He disclosed plans to establish a NATA Bayelsa Innovation and Training Centre within 12 months to certify members in auto diagnostics, hybrid and electric vehicle maintenance, as well as compressed natural gas (CNG) conversion.

“Today’s vehicles are computers on wheels. If we remain only roadside mechanics, we will be left behind. We must upgrade in Bayelsa,” he said.

Omavie also announced the proposed “One Technician, One Scanner” initiative, a microcredit scheme designed to equip workshops with modern diagnostic tools, in partnership with the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) and financial institutions.

On collaboration, he pledged to work with the Bayelsa State Ministry of Transport, the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police to tackle fake spare parts and unsafe repairs.

He further proposed the creation of a joint NATA-government task force on vehicle safety to conduct quarterly inspections of commercial vehicles.

“We are not asking for handouts; we are seeking partnership. With policy support, we can deliver safer roads, create jobs and boost internally generated revenue,” Omavie added.

As part of his welfare agenda, the chairman said the association would introduce a health and life insurance scheme for registered members and engage the State Internal Revenue Board to address alleged harassment by illegal tax collectors.

“We are not just mechanics; we are automobile technicians—professionals who keep Bayelsa moving,” he said.

Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Mr Peter Dolor, described the election as peaceful, noting that NATA represents a diverse body of skilled professionals committed to innovation and excellence in the automotive industry.

Other members of the newly elected state executive include Mr Sabestin Omenalom (Vice Chairman), Mr Chijoke Collins (Secretary), Mr Charles Adoke (Financial Secretary), Mrs Love Dighabo (Organising Secretary) and Comrade Babawele Tunde (Treasurer).

Also elected are Mr Emmanuel Okoh (Public Relations Officer), Mr Tarila Komboye (Provost), Mr Obinna Okorokwo (Auditor), Mr Ejike Nneji (Marshal I) and Mr Chisom Amaku (Marshal II).
