Ikorodu Local Government Area in Lagos State has granted N10,000 bursary each to needy students from different tertiary institutions on Thursday.

The students who were in their number, received the award at the LGA’s secretariat in Ikorodu.

The Ikorodu LGA chairman, Mr Wasiu Adesina, stated that the awardees were selected from the seven wards that made up the council.

“It gladdens my heart to perform another epoch-making event in the life of the youths of Ikorodu local government.

“This event marks a clear departure from a rhetoric of promises that will never be fulfilled.

“This is a government that says it and by the grace of God fulfil promises made despite all odds.

“Equally we have consistently delivered on our promise to give bursary awards to indigent students every year,” Adesina said.

He said the council also distributed learning materials to primary school pupils, providing chairs and benches to some primary schools in the local government.

He said the council also distributed free forms for the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (for private candidates) and Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination forms to some students.

According to Adesina, his administration would continue to support education as one of its agenda despite the meagre allocation the LGA receives from the Federal Government monthly.

He advised the students to face their studies and shun cultism, saying that their primary objectives in going to school are to become well-informed and trained citizens that are expected to better the lots of the society.

“We call on the youths to vote for us during our campaign about four years ago with promises to support them on their education pursuit.

“The consistent promise to give bursary awards to students may appear impossible considering the resources at our disposal.

“We are not as lucky as some other LGAs and Local Council Developmental Areas that receive huge sums of money as federal allocation.

“But with prudent management of resources at our disposal, all our campaign promises will be delivered,” he assured.

The chairman pledged to employ the best graduate into the revenue and fiscal commission to help in increasing the internally generated revenue of the LGA.

The National President, National Association of Ikorodu Division students, Mr Samuel Soyiga, thanked the chairman and advised the beneficiaries to judiciously make good use of the money and for the purpose it was meant.

Another beneficiary, Mr Oyinlola Balogun also advised his colleagues to ensure that they have the best performance and shun cultism as well as other vices that may tarnish the image of their families.
