School resumption: Police deploy officers to 45 schools

The Nigeria Police Force is beefing up security in about 45 schools across the country situated in high-risk areas.

The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Olumuyiwa Adejobi said this in a video message sent to journalists on Monday.

CSP Adejobi said the police needed to work with proprietors to ensure that the school environment is safe for students as a new academic year begins.

The reason for the deployment of police officers, as directed by the Inspector-General of Police, is to ensure that the schools, particularly private ones, have security structures in place before resumption.

According to the police spokesman, the deployment of officers is strategic, and hence not all schools will have a police presence.

He assured parents and school owners that the security measures put in place are highly effective.

He also appealed to parents to work alongside the police and school authorities to provide security for their wards and children, asking them to be cautious when using commercial vehicles to convey their children to school.

Parents that are unable to drop their children off at school by themselves should ensure they give custody of their little ones to persons they know and trust, CSP Adejobi said.

Additionally, he stated the importance of parents letting the school authorities know the faces of the people responsible for picking up their children after school.

He concluded by asking all schools to have a solid functioning internal security system and the phone numbers of the divisional police officers in their areas.
