Okoronkwo alleges theft at Super Falcons’ Morocco hotel

Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has alleged that hotel cleaning staff in Morocco stole cash from players’ rooms during the team’s preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Okoronkwo made the allegation in a series of Snapchat posts on Friday, claiming the thefts occurred while players were away from their rooms and cleaners were carrying out housekeeping duties.
Nigeria camped at a hotel in Casablanca before departing for Rabat, where the Super Falcons are scheduled to play their Group C matches.
“The cleaning people stole the money. They waited until we weren’t in the room before coming in to clean and steal the money,” Okoronkwo wrote in one of the posts.
She also urged teammates and followers to leave negative reviews of the hotel.
Okoronkwo initially claimed she lost $500, but later corrected the figure.
“Guys, I did my calculations wrong; they actually stole $700, not $500,” she wrote alongside a photograph of some of her teammates.
She alleged that several other players were also affected. According to her posts, midfielder Halimatu Ayinde lost $100, striker Asisat Oshoala also had $100 stolen, while Joy Omewa reportedly lost £120. She added that another teammate also lost an unspecified amount.
Okoronkwo said the players confronted hotel staff over the missing money but received no satisfactory explanation.
“We started talking to them, and they don’t have answers. They also started being disrespectful,” she wrote.
She further alleged that front desk staff showed little concern after the incident was reported.
Concluding her posts, Okoronkwo warned prospective guests against staying at the hotel, describing her experience as disappointing and accusing its staff of stealing from guests.
The Super Falcons had assembled a full 25-player squad at their hotel camp in Casablanca after the arrival of Deborah Abiodun and Gift Monday, with head coach Justine Madugu completing preparations for the tournament.
Nigeria, the defending and record 10-time WAFCON champions, are targeting another continental title, with qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup and a record $2 million winners’ prize at stake.
Neither the hotel management nor the Nigeria Football Federation had responded to the allegations as of the time this report was filed.
