The Department of Building, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Niger Delta University (NDU), Bayelsa State, on Friday, inducted its pioneer graduates into the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB).
The ceremony, held on the university campus, had as its theme: “Building the Future: Innovating, Integrating and Inspiring in the Construction 4.0 Era.”
Speaking at the event, the Acting Head of the Department, Dr Christopher Belonwu, described the occasion as one of fulfilment, reflection and profound joy, noting that it marked a major milestone in the department’s history.
Belonwu said the university remained committed to producing competent, ethical and industry-ready building professionals capable of contributing meaningfully to national development and global best practices in the built environment.
“As Head of Department, witnessing the induction of our graduates into the graduate cadre of the Nigerian Institute of Building gives me immense joy,” he said.
He explained that the Department of Building commenced in the 2019/2020 academic session with a clear vision, adding that despite initial challenges such as modest facilities and high expectations, the department had remained steadfast in its goals.
“Like every worthwhile venture, the journey was not without challenges. However, today, that belief in what the department could become has been validated.
“This induction ceremony represents the fruition of years of hard work, resilience and determination by our students, the tireless efforts of our lecturers, and the support of the university management that made this dream sustainable,” Belonwu stated.
He described the pioneer graduates as ambassadors and the living legacy of the department, stressing that induction into the NIOB was more than a ceremonial rite, but a formal recognition of their readiness to join the professional community of builders.
“It signifies that you have met the academic and ethical standards required to begin your professional journey. With this honour comes responsibility—to uphold professional standards, practice with integrity and commit to continuous self-development,” he added.
Belonwu urged the inductees to embrace lifelong learning, seek mentorship, foster innovation and uphold ethical standards throughout their careers.
The Vice-Chancellor of NDU, Prof. Allen Agih, described the ceremony as historic, noting that it produced the institution’s first set of professional builders.
Represented by the Dean, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Prof. Sylvester Ebigbagha, the Vice-Chancellor said the university operated in line with global best practices, in compliance with accreditation requirements.
He commended the lecturers, professional bodies and students, urging the inductees to continue to grow and excel in their careers.
In his remarks, the President of NIOB, Mr Abimbola Kolade, commended NDU for the quality training given to the graduates. Kolade, who was represented by Mr Ahmed Baba Ahmed, former Chairman of NIOB, Bayelsa Chapter, encouraged the inductees to excel in the profession through innovation, research and continuous skills development.
He also urged them to actively participate in NIOB programmes and activities to enhance their professional growth.
Also speaking, a former National Publicity Secretary of NIOB, Bldr. Akinola Bammeke highlighted the vast opportunities available in the building industry.
He emphasised that success in the profession requires dedication and determination, advising the inductees to remain focused and avoid obstacles that could hinder personal and professional development.
