Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has led about 100 senior citizens on a 2.5-kilometre fitness walk in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as part of efforts to promote healthy ageing.
The participants, members of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library Senior Citizens Club, took part in the exercise on Saturday as part of the club’s keep-fit programme.
Obasanjo, who joined the walk, said regular exercise was essential for maintaining physical fitness and improving the quality of life in old age.
The former President said the initiative was designed not only to promote physical activity but also to encourage older people to remain active and independent.
“Growing old should not prevent people from living the way they should live. Exercise is a vital element in ensuring that people age gracefully and graciously,” Obasanjo said.
He noted that membership of the club was restricted to people aged 70 and above, adding that he was approaching the required age himself.
Obasanjo also pointed to a 90-year-old participant as an example of the benefits of remaining physically active in later life.
The club’s President, Group Captain Ayobamiji Erinfolami (retd.), commended Obasanjo for participating in the exercise and demonstrating the importance of leading by example.
A close associate of the former President, Elder Udo Umoren, described the walk as an important source of motivation for members of the club as they continued to embrace active ageing. The exercise was organised as part of the club’s broader efforts to promote fitness, social engagement and healthier living among senior citizens.
