The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has blamed speeding for a tanker crash and fire beneath Otedola Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday.
The diesel tanker crashed on the outward-bound section of the expressway around 4:10 pm and plunged into the underpass, sparking a fire, the FRSC Lagos Sector Command said in a statement issued by its Public Education Officer, Elizabeth Jayeola.
The command’s rescue team arrived at 4:20 p.m., five minutes after the crash was reported. Two men were injured and taken to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre. No deaths were reported in the initial account.
FRSC personnel worked with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the police and other emergency responders to contain the fire and manage traffic.
The Lagos Sector Commander, Kehinde Hamzat, warned tanker drivers against speeding and reckless manoeuvres. He also urged fleet operators to improve driver training and supervision, maintain their vehicles and ensure drivers follow speed limits.
Motorists approaching emergency scenes were advised to slow down, keep a safe distance and follow traffic instructions.
The FRSC also warned the public to stay away from burning tankers and avoid obstructing rescue teams.
