Azare warns farmers, herders against fomenting trouble in A’Ibom

The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, Baba Mohammed Azare has cautioned farmers and herders against fomenting trouble, saying such persons would face the wrath of the law.
Speaking on Friday in Uyo during a stakeholder meeting with representatives of cattle dealers and the farmers’ association to address issues causing tension between them, Azare expressed displeasure over the conflicts that have led to unnecessary violence.
The CP who warned that such actions would not be tolerated added that the police would not hesitate to arrest and prosecute individuals who engage in violence, adding that no farmer or cattle dealer would be allowed to jeopardize the safety of the community.
He sued for peaceful relations between the farmers and cattle rearers and encouraged them to resolve their differences for the collective well-being of the state.
He said the Police were against situations where criminals enter cattle farms, shoot the animals, and steal them, noting that the anti-grazing committee includes some members of the Fulani community who assist the police in tracking down suspects and making arrests.
“We urge farmers to report any incidents where cows enter their farms for grazing to the police promptly, rather than taking the law into their own hands.
“We cannot afford to let lives be lost over matters that can be settled peacefully. The police will not tolerate any form of destruction of property, and anyone caught damaging others’ property will face the full force of the law,” he stated.
The CP directed that all forms of violence, whether physical or verbal should end, noting that the police are determined to protect both parties ensure that the law is followed, and make those who break it face the consequences.
He emphasized that grievances should be addressed through lawful means, adding that the police would always be available to mediate and maintain order.
While speaking, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs Rosemary Ubia commended the CP for organizing the meeting and pledged to convey the message of peace to her members.
Ubia said the farmers will avoid taking laws into their hands, but will report any grievances to the police, and commended the understanding and cooperation demonstrated by the Cattle Dealers Association.
In his response, the Chairman, Cattle Dealers Association, Alhaji Mohammed Mijinyawa, promised that the group would fully cooperate with the police and the government.
Mijinyawa assured the farmers that the cattle dealers were committed to peaceful coexistence and promised to caution his members to avoid any actions that could escalate tension.
He pledged to contact the police directly whenever issues arise rather than resort to conflict.
