A’Ibom police reschedule October 1 political activities

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has directed all political parties, groups and associations to reschedule rallies, meetings, processions and other approved political activities earlier scheduled for Thursday, October 1, 2026.

The command said the directive followed credible intelligence indicating that some individuals might exploit the gatherings to cause disturbances and threaten public peace.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, said no political party, group, association, or supporter should proceed with any political activity in the state on October 1 based on approvals previously granted by the command.

She advised affected parties and groups to liaise with the police and propose alternative dates, which would be considered based on the prevailing security situation.

The command said the precautionary measure was necessary following security assessments indicating a potential risk of individuals using political gatherings to foment trouble, disrupt public order or endanger members of the public.

The statement called on political parties, candidates, supporters, youth groups and other stakeholders to exercise restraint and comply with the directive.

The command also said security agencies would maintain heightened vigilance across the state to protect lives and property.

According to the statement, the directive was precautionary and non-partisan, and was issued in the interest of peace, security and public order.

“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command remains committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all lawful political and civic activities and assures stakeholders that requests for alternative dates will be given appropriate consideration,” the statement said.
