The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched an investigation into allegations of criminal defamation, cyberstalking and other related offences, while warning social media users against engaging in unlawful online activities.

The investigation followed a petition dated 17 June 2026, submitted to the Commissioner of Police on behalf of Senator Effiong Bob by Samuel Ikpo & Company Chambers. The petition alleges that Mr Ewa Okpo published and circulated videos and other materials on his social media platforms containing statements that were said to be false, malicious, and defamatory, thereby damaging the petitioner’s reputation.

According to the command, the petition was promptly acted upon in line with its constitutional and statutory responsibilities. The suspect was subsequently arrested, taken into lawful custody and is currently assisting investigators.

The police stressed that although the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees freedom of expression, the right does not extend to publishing false information, engaging in criminal defamation, cyberstalking, cyberbullying, blackmail or any other unlawful activity capable of damaging reputations, inciting hatred or disrupting public peace.

The command warned individuals who use anonymous accounts, mobile phones or social media platforms to commit criminal offences that they would be identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

“The Nigeria Police Force has the legal authority, investigative capacity, and technological capability to trace, investigate, arrest and prosecute offenders, regardless of where unlawful online publications originate. Anyone who knowingly shares, republishes or amplifies false and malicious content could face criminal liability if investigations establish their involvement.

“The investigation is being conducted professionally, impartially and in strict compliance with the Constitution and other applicable laws. The rights of all parties involved are being respected while available evidence is being carefully examined to ensure justice is served,” Azare assured.

It stated that anyone found culpable at the conclusion of the investigation would be charged before a court of competent jurisdiction, adding that it would not be influenced by intimidation, public opinion, media trials or any attempt to obstruct the course of justice.

The police also urged members of the public to use social media responsibly, advising them to ensure that all online publications are truthful, decent and respectful of the rights, reputation and dignity of others.

Reaffirming its commitment to protecting the rights, reputation and security of law-abiding citizens, the Command said it would continue to ensure that anyone who violates the law, whether offline or online, is brought to justice in accordance with due process and the rule of law.

The statement was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command.
