The Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun, Delta State, has matriculated 2,101 students into its 2025/2026 full-time and School of Industrial and Continuing Education programmes.
The Principal and Chief Executive of PTI, Dr Samuel Onoji, administered the institute’s oath to the new students on Friday. He was represented at the ceremony by the Director of Research and Development, Dr Tina Isichei.
In his welcome address, Onoji congratulated the matriculating students on joining what he described as the foremost specialised petroleum institution in sub-Saharan Africa.
He noted that the oil and gas industry is highly dynamic and demanding, requiring innovation, adaptability and resourcefulness to succeed. He reaffirmed that PTI remains a centre of excellence in Nigeria’s petroleum sector, providing leadership, best practices, training and research.
Onoji told the students that their admission into the institute presents a valuable opportunity to gain entry into the oil and gas industry through the technical and practical training they will receive during their studies.
He also revealed that several organisations have recently sought collaboration with PTI due to its proven capacity and effectiveness. These include Laser Engineering, Ioda Energy and Indora Petrochemicals, among others.
“This matriculation ceremony officially ushers you into this citadel of academic excellence. I congratulate you on gaining admission into this great institute.
“The decisions you make today and the actions you take will determine who you become tomorrow. Therefore, remain focused, resilient and disciplined. Challenges may arise during your studies, but do not give up,” he said.
Onoji urged the students to take advantage of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) programme to ease financial pressures, particularly for those from less privileged backgrounds.
He also advised them to familiarise themselves with the institute’s student handbook and strictly adhere to its rules and regulations.
The PTI chief reiterated the institute’s zero tolerance for examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, theft, robbery, indecent dressing, sexual and physical assault, certificate forgery and other forms of misconduct.
He further encouraged the students to follow proper communication channels when lodging complaints and to keep pace with emerging trends in both fossil fuels and renewable energy.
Onoji advised them to leverage digital tools such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics, robotics and machine learning to enhance their skills.
According to him, this approach will broaden their knowledge, strengthen their competencies and improve their employability in the ever-evolving oil and gas industry.
