New boxing ring sparks sporting revival in A’Ibom
A newly donated boxing ring is set to transform training and competition in Akwa Ibom State, replacing an ageing facility that had been in use for nearly two decades.
The Commissioner for Sports, Paul Bassey, said the old ring had required constant repairs, with carpenters frequently engaged to fix worn-out sections ahead of events. In contrast, the new governor-provided ring offers a more durable and comfortable alternative, suitable not only for boxing but also for other martial arts disciplines.

Bassey added that, alongside the ring, the state government has procured sports bicycles to boost athletes’ performance at regional, national and international levels.
“Following the Niger Delta sports event in Uyo, where the state finished sixth, the government introduced early training programmes and invested in modern sporting equipment. These efforts yielded results at the subsequent competition in Edo State, where Akwa Ibom improved from sixth to fourth position,” he said.
He noted that athletes were rewarded based on their performances, receiving cash prizes ranging from ₦500,000 to ₦2 million.
The commissioner further explained that the next priority is the development of indoor sports facilities ahead of future competitions, including the forthcoming sports festival. He added that steps are already being taken to equip indoor sports, with plans to establish a permanent venue.
Commenting on the development, Nsibiet John recalled that Bassey’s appointment had initially been met with scepticism, with some critics suggesting he would focus solely on football. However, he commended the commissioner for supporting a broad range of sporting activities.
John also stressed that while acquiring equipment is vital, proper maintenance remains essential. He urged that all facilities and equipment be carefully safeguarded to ensure their longevity and continued benefit to athletes.
Stakeholders have called for sustained support for sports development in the state, urging patience as the government works to deliver more world-class facilities.
The inauguration of the boxing ring featured demonstration bouts across weight categories from 44kg to 75kg. The first two matches lasted two minutes each, while the third lasted one minute.
The 75kg men’s bout featured Emediong Joe of Nsit Ubium, a gold medallist at the 2025 Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival, bronze medallist at the 2025 National Sports Festival in Ogun State, and gold medallist at the maiden NDDC Games in Uyo. He faced Nyong Nyong of Oron, who previously exited at the quarter-final stage of the Commonwealth trials in Lagos.
