Surveyors in Lagos State must actively participate in politics and governance to promote value-driven leadership and national development, the guest speaker, Mr Adewusi Ademola, has said.

Ademola made this call at the 2026 Annual General Meeting and Luncheon of the Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria (APPSN), Lagos State branch, held in Magodo. The event was themed “Politics and Governance: Enhancing Value-Driven Leadership in the Professional and Political Landscape.”

He stressed that professionals in politics must drive value-based governance, noting that leadership quality directly determines citizens’ quality of life. “Who gets what, when and how hinges on leadership quality,” he said.

Ademola highlighted the critical role surveyors play in land administration, urban planning and national development. He urged them to move beyond passive observation and contribute actively to policy formulation through research, data-driven insights and public advocacy.

“I encourage professional bodies to promote political awareness among their members and create platforms for engagement in governance processes,” he added, noting that nation-building requires collective responsibility anchored on discipline, integrity and service.

In his remarks, the APPSN Chairman, Lagos State branch, Surveyor Afolabi Olaoluwa, described the gathering as more than a statutory requirement, calling it a cornerstone for reflection on the association’s progress over the past year. He urged members to seize the opportunity for constructive dialogue while fostering innovation, collaboration and professional development.

Olaoluwa noted that advances in technology now enable surveyors to deliver highly precise, real-time data for projects. He advised the public to consult registered surveyors before embarking on any major project, stressing that their expertise helps to prevent errors in land measurement, construction and project alignment.

He also encouraged surveyors to engage actively in politics and governance, emphasising that professionals must not be excluded from decision-making processes that shape national development.

Addressing land administration in Nigeria, Olaoluwa called for urgent reforms to tackle challenges such as land grabbing and inadequate housing distribution. He urged the government to take greater responsibility for providing affordable housing and ensuring that development projects benefit the wider public.

He added that effective land management and transparent policies would promote peaceful coexistence and restore public trust in governance, noting that adopting global best practices could significantly improve Nigeria’s land administration system.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Lagos State branch, Adedeji Olanrewaju (a surveyor), described the theme as timely and urged surveyors to uphold integrity and accountability, mentor younger professionals, and promote excellence in leadership.

The National Chairman of APPSN, Mr Simepiriye Kalio, called on surveyors to become more competitive politically, administratively and industrially, and to pursue leadership positions at higher levels.

The event featured the presentation of awards and attracted key stakeholders, including the Chairman of the Ikorodu Local Government Area, Mr Adedayo Ladega, who was represented by his vice, Mr Babawale Alogba, alongside other experts and traditional leaders.
