Security alert: Police appeal to NLC to defer FCT protest
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has appealed to the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to reschedule its planned protest slated for Tuesday, February 3, 2026, citing concerns over public safety and security.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the command said intelligence reports indicated that some proscribed groups were planning to infiltrate and hijack the protest.
According to the statement, the police are aware of the planned peaceful protest by the NLC FCT Council scheduled to hold within the Federal Capital Territory.
While reaffirming respect for citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and protest, the command stressed its commitment to providing adequate security for all lawful activities. However, it noted that intelligence at its disposal revealed plans by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) and other non-state actors to exploit the protest for activities capable of threatening public peace and security.
“In view of this development, and in the overriding interest of public safety, the FCT Police Command respectfully appeals to the organisers of the planned protest to consider rescheduling the event to a later date and time,” the statement read.
The command explained that the appeal was aimed at preventing any breakdown of law and order, while also ensuring that the rights of other residents to safety, freedom of movement, and the conduct of lawful daily activities are not infringed upon.
The FCT Police Command further assured residents of its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property, urging members of the public to continue to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in the collective effort to maintain peace and security across the territory.
