N’Delta groups berate calls for protests, NDDC mgt sack

Nathan Tamarapreye, Yenagoa

Niger Delta groups on Monday dismissed persistent calls by a section in the region against current leadership in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and urged the aggrieved to close ranks in the interest of all.

The coalition under the auspices of, “We Are Stronger Together Movement” expressed their desire to support the NDDC to fulfil its mandate rather than work at cross purposes.

“The Movement is deeply concerned that such actions not only hinder progress but reflect a destructive mindset that undermines the positive efforts and strides made by the current NDDC leadership.

“It is disheartening that, rather than support NDDC’s developmental policies and the open-door engagements demonstrated by its leadership, certain individuals and groups continue to engage in smear campaigns.

“These actions, aimed at undermining those in positions of authority for selfish political gains, are counterproductive and damaging not only to the individuals involved but also to the region as a whole,” the statement reads.

Joshua Benjamin, Vice Chairman of Amalgamation of Ethnic Nationalities in the Niger Delta and a prominent member of the Movement, while speaking on the development in Yenagoa reaffirmed the rights of the people to demand accountability from their leaders through lawful and constructive means.

He further emphasised that deliberations aimed at regional development must be governed by the principle of fairness, transparency, and due process, ensuring the right to a fair hearing for all parties.

Also Engr. Opubo Ibieneye, President of League of Niger Delta Professionals, opined that constant calls for protests and the sack of the MD/CEO of NDDC and the Board not only jeopardise the significant achievements of the current leadership but also tarnish the image of the Federal Government, particularly President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who has demonstrated commendable foresight in appointing a hardworking, humble, and people-centred team committed to the development of the Niger Delta region.

The Movement also pointed out the disparity in public scrutiny, comparing the NDDC to similar commissions in other regions, which receive comparatively less criticism despite facing similar challenges. The group urges all stakeholders in the Niger Delta to abandon divisive and counterproductive tactics in favour of open dialogue, collaboration, and unity.

“True development in the region can only be achieved if we adopt a constructive and inclusive approach in addressing the challenges we face,” the group noted.

Regarding the appointment of Chief Chiedu Ebie, the Movement expressed strong support for the judgment of the Federal High Court, which affirmed that his appointment aligns with the provisions of the NDDC Act, which mandates that the Chairman of the NDDC be appointed from an oil-producing Area. This judicial affirmation reaffirms the lawfulness of the appointment and is consistent with previous practices.

“We Are Stronger Together Movement” calls on all Niger Deltans to focus on cooperation, mutual respect, and constructive dialogue. The group emphasises that prioritising development and fostering peace and unity is the way forward for the sustainable growth and prosperity of the Niger Delta region.

“We Are Stronger Together Movement” Advocating for Peace & Development of our people and our region,” the group added.
