Soldiers, civilian killed at Army checkpoint in Anambra
The Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State boils again on Wednesday as some gunmen killed three soldiers and a civilian in Umunze.
The gunmen were said to have struck at a checkpoint, while the soldiers were said to be in their stationary vehicle.
The incident happened a few days after a similar attack by gunmen killed two soldiers in Enugu State.
Recall also that about two ago, gunmen attacked the convoy of the senator representing Anambra South Senatorial Zone, Ifeanyi Ubah, at the Nkwo Market area of Enugwu-Ukwu community, killing some of the police officers and aides in the convoy.
Sources said there were concerns among residents of Umunze and other Anambra towns over reprisal by soldiers.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack.
He said, “There was shooting in the area but we don’t have details of what happened. I cannot speak for the army, but we have deployed our men in the area to restore order.”
