Police debunk officers’ death claim in Akwa Ibom crash
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has dismissed claims that police officers were killed in a motor accident at a checkpoint in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area.
The command said no police officer was killed or injured in the crash, which occurred on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, at the Ikot Obio Odongo checkpoint along the Nung Udoe-Uyo Road.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has dismissed claims that police officers were killed in a motor accident at a checkpoint in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area.
The command said no police officer was killed or injured in the crash, which occurred on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, at the Ikot Obio Odongo checkpoint along the Nung Udoe-Uyo Road.
The clarification followed the circulation of a video on social media alleging that officers had lost their lives in the incident.
In a statement issued on 12 September 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, Police Public Relations Officer for the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, said preliminary investigations showed that the accident occurred at about 1:40pm during a stop-and-search operation at the checkpoint.
According to John, officers had stopped a mini-bus, number plate DUU 485 XA, driven by a man identified as Anietie, when a Lexus, with number plate GWA 529 DS, allegedly travelling at speed from behind, crashed into it.
The impact caused significant damage to the mini-bus, while both vehicles were subsequently taken to the police station for investigation and documentation.
John said no police officer or other person was killed or injured in the incident, contrary to the claims accompanying the viral video.
“The claim that police officers lost their lives in the incident is false. No police officer was killed or injured,” he said.
The command urged residents to disregard the report and avoid sharing unverified information capable of causing panic.
It also advised members of the public to verify reports through credible sources before publishing or circulating them on social media.
The Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, reassured residents that the command remained committed to protecting lives and property.
Azare said the police would continue to conduct lawful stop-and-search operations as part of efforts to prevent crime and maintain public safety.
