Ogun State Police Command has arrested one Odugbesan Ayodele, a 29-year-old teacher for kidnapping his eight years old former pupil, Rasaq Akeeb, on October 4.
The Police Public Relations in the state, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said this in a statement in Abeokuta.
According to him, the suspect was arrested following a complaint lodged at Ajuwon Divisional Headquarters by the mother of the victim, Fatima Akeeb, who reported that her son, who had gone to school at Arifanla area of Akute, had been kidnapped by an unknown person, who called her phone, asking her to bring the sum of N200,000 before the child would be released.
He added that upon the information from the troubled mother, the DPO of Ajuwon Division, SP Andrew Akinseye, mobilized his team, who trailed the suspect using the number he used in calling the victim’s mother.
Oyeyemi said that on getting to the hideout of the suspect, he was offered part payment of the initial amount by the police operatives, who disguised themselves.
He noted that the suspect was eventually arrested and took the police detectives to where he had kept the child, adding that the child was not hurt.
The Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun, ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the anti-kidnapping unit of the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further questioning, after which he will be prosecuted. Ajogun also urged parents and guardians to look after their wards properly, and be mindful of their movement, especially when they go and come back from school.
