The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Akwa Ibom State has met with the management of Akwa Ibom Transport Company (AKTC) and solicited support in conveying corps members across the states of the federation.

The State Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs Chinyere Ekwe revealed this to newsmen shortly after a closed-door meeting with the management of AKTC in Uyo on Thursday.

She noted that one of the discussions during their meeting was on the dangers of night journeys, adding that the scheme has appealed to the transport company to regulate their period of travelling for the safety of corps members.

Ekwe, who stressed that the transport company remains one of their critical stakeholders, said the meeting was to inform the management of the company about the orientation exercise which is to commence on Wednesday, 1st Nov. 2023.

“I have come to meet with the Managing Director of Akwa Ibom Transport Company (AKTC) with my team to inform them about the 2023 Batch C corps member which is scheduled to commence on Wednesday next week.

“I have come to solicit the co-operation of the MD of AKTC and her team concerning the prospective corp members who will be travelling with them to different locations in Nigeria.

“I have also sought the co-operation of them (AKTC) to end their journey by 6 p.m. so that they can continue the following day if they leave late.”

The State Coordinator stated that in response, the Managing Director of AKTC has assured NYSC of full cooperation in conveying the corps members in the state.

According to her, the MD has put in place measures to curtail night journeys in the company, adding that any erring driver going against the new order will be severely sanctioned.

“The MD has assured me of their support in this regard and she also informed me that they have put measures in place so that drivers who do not abide by the instructions are properly sanctioned.

“She assured me that this time around, they will ensure that they leave the park early and arrive at their destination early, and if not possible, they will stop at 6 pm, sleepover, and continue the next day.”

Ekwe urged the prospective corps members not to board vehicles along the road or unregistered parks but they should travel on a vehicle from a known park for their safety.
