NYSC member provides medical care, donates items to support 71 widows

An Ogun State-born member of the National Youth Service Corps, Olusile Joy Omotola, has provided widows in the Ovom Community of Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State with free medical care.

The corps member besides providing free consultation and check-ups for widows on blood sugar and blood pressure, together with other corps members corps also donated wrappers, foodstuffs, like bags of rice and garri, to the women.

According to Olusile, widows as members of society do not only suffer the death of their spouses but also suffer mental health illnesses like depression, anxiety, physical health illness high blood pressure, diabetics, stroke, and more.

She said: “Widowhood is among the most stressful of all life events and requires more psychological and behavioural adjustment than any other life transition.

“After we have carried out a critical study of the situation in Ovom community, we discovered that widows need a proper meal, proper health care and good clothing. They are, in fact, endangered folks in the community. This is what gave birth to the project “NEW YEAR FOR WIDOWS.”

The goal of the project, according to Olusile is to empower the widows in the community with some of the life basic amenities, create a healthy environment for them to support each other through this period of their lives, celebrate their strength and encourage them to keep pushing for the coming years ahead, teach them how to take care of their all-round wellbeing and also conduct high blood pressure and blood sugar test on them to give them personalized recommendation to keep themselves at their best always.

Mr Ibesemiye Silver, Ovom Community Development Committee (CDC) speaking on behalf of the community and the widows thanked Miss Olusile for her kind gesture; also prayed to God almighty to bless her in all her future endeavours.
