The Chairman of Nsit Ubium Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Mr Alfred Charles, has announced that the council has invested ₦100 million in an education trust fund to support students in the area.

Charles disclosed this on Wednesday while speaking with journalists in Nsit Ubium.

He said the council launched its maiden scholarship scheme in 2025, benefiting 53 students from the local government area. According to him, the council covered one year’s tuition fees and provided textbooks for the beneficiaries.

He added that another 50 students would be enrolled in the scholarship programme by August, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 103 before the end of his administration.

Describing education as a key priority, Charles said it remains one of the most important pillars of his administration.

“Education is a top priority for this administration. The trust fund is designed to support brilliant but underprivileged students whose parents may not be financially capable of sponsoring their education,” he said.

He called on well-meaning individuals to contribute to the fund to expand its reach and impact.

The chairman further revealed that the council had passed a bill mandating that all political office holders contribute 1% of their earnings to the education trust fund.

Charles noted that the council’s education policy aligns with Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda.

He also disclosed plans to roll out empowerment programmes later in the year.

In addition, Charles said the council procured 200 computer systems to support JAMB-UTME examinations and sponsored over 200 indigent students by purchasing their JAMB forms last year.

On infrastructure, he said the council was constructing the Urua Ntakrok Market in Ikot Ubo, noting that the project is nearing 10 per cent completion.

He added that landscaping and beautification projects are also ongoing at the council secretariat.
