NSCDC arrests five suspected vandals, clampdown on buyers of products in A'Ibom

The Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says it has arrested five vandals of public infrastructure in Akwa Ibom and will clamp down on all those who engaged in buying products from vandals.

The Akwa Ibom Commandant of NSCDC, Mr Bashar Hussaini disclosed this to newsmen in Uyo on Wednesday.

Hussaini said it was worrisome that the government spent huge resources on providing infrastructure for the benefit of citizens, only for hoodlums to go and vandalised for their selfish interest.

He said that the command would now target those who patronise vandals to curb vandalism in the state.

The state commandant added that those arrested would be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

“NSCDC has taken vandalism of Government critical infrastructure very seriously, and we are looking forward to receiving information from the public to help us protect the infrastructure for the benefit of all citizens.

“We’ve arrested five suspects within the month, for vandalising public infrastructure.

“Three were arrested for vandalising aluminium roofing sheets at an international market in Itam, while two were nabbed for vandalising electric cables.

“As the leading agency in the protection of critical infrastructure, we have deployed our men to all flashpoints and strategic places to ensure that vandalism is brought to the barest minimum in the state.

“So that in case of any report, we respond swiftly, not until they come to us in the Command.

“Our projection is to ensure that we meet up with our crime mapping,” Hussain said.

He renewed the commitment of the command to tackle vandalism headlong and make Akwa Ibom uncomfortable for vandals and criminal elements.

Hussaini said that the command will continue to deploy intelligence and community-based approaches to security as it is yielding positive results.

The state commandant called on residents to partner with the NSCDC in the timely dissemination of information on criminal activities in their localities for prompt action.
