The Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) has urged its newly inducted 53 fellows on honesty in real estate businesses.

The institute’s President and Chairman of Council, ESV Emmanuel Wike said this during the 28th John Wood Ekpenyong memorial lecture and induction ceremony in Uyo.

According to Wike, special knowledge, competence, ethics, and integrity are the hallmarks of true professionals.

Wike said the absence of the four attributes and more among the professionals are the cause of many disasters in Nigeria. He noted that Nigeria is in need of honest consultancy and other professional real estate firms.

He stated that it was a disservice to the nation for the fellows to deliberately act otherwise, saying their membership in the institute speaks of their determination and hard work over the past ten years.

The institute’s president remarked that the institute has produced thousands of estate surveyors and valuers who have impacted the development of the nation in its 53 years of existence.

He said: “The hallmarks of true professionals are special knowledge, competence, ethics, and integrity. The absence of these attributes has been the cause of many disasters in Nigeria, I charge you to remain committed to the continuous acquisition of knowledge and to exhibit at all times the qualities of good conduct integrity, honesty, and devotion.

“Nigeria needs honest Estate Surveyors and Valuers rendering honest consultancy and other professional real estate services. It is a disservice to the Institution and to the nation as a whole for any noble colleague to knowingly act otherwise.

“The honour conferred on you today requires absolute compliance to professional ethics and standards of practice, total commitment to the aims and objectives of the Institution, mentoring and counseling the younger members of the profession accordingly.

“It is expected of you to continue to show quality leadership to other members of the profession, especially the younger ones a espouse the practice for the benefit of mankind.”
