NOUN bursar shot dead returning home in Zamfara
The Bursar of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, was shot dead in Zamfara State on Sunday, 6 September 2026.
The university confirmed his death in an official statement signed by Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Ajayi, and posted on its Facebook page. According to the notice, Marafa was attacked while returning from Gusau.

The university confirmed his death in an official statement signed by Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Ajayi, and posted on its Facebook page. According to the notice, Marafa was attacked while returning from Gusau.
Marafa, appointed Bursar in September 2022, had previously held several senior roles within the institution. The university described him as a “dedicated and committed staff member,” adding that his death was a “profound loss” to the NOUN community.
“The entire University community mourns the passing of a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the NOUN family,” the statement read.
A Janaza Ga’ib prayer will be held for him on Monday, 7 September, immediately after the 1:30pm Zuhr prayer at the NOUN Jumaat Mosque, Jabi, Abuja.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Shehu Usman Adamu, noted that former Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the NOUN Governing Council, Malam Isa Yuguda, OFR, will join other Muslim faithful in offering prayers. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma is also expected to attend.
The university extended its condolences to Marafa’s family, colleagues, and friends, urging well-wishers to join in prayers for the deceased.
