NEMA distributes relief items to flood victims in A'Ibom

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has distributed relief materials worth millions of naira to 2024 flood victims in Ikono and Ini Local Government Areas of the Akwa Ibom State.

It was gathered that the relief items distributed included bags of rice, bags of garri, vegetable oil, tomato puree and seasoning cubes, among others.

In her remarks during the distribution on Monday, the Director General of NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar, sympathised with the victims for their losses.

Umar, represented by Mrs Mmandu Aisueni, Head of Operations in Akwa Ibom, said that the gesture aimed to provide immediate relief to the victims as they rebuild their lives.

“It is with mixed emotions that we gather here today, saddened by the devastating impact of the recent floods, yet hopeful as we come together to provide much-needed relief to our brothers and sisters

“The effects of the floods have been deeply felt in these communities, disrupting lives and livelihoods, and leaving many in urgent need.

“Today, we are distributing these relief items not just as a gesture of support but as a demonstration of our shared humanity and commitment to your recovery,” Umar said.

Umar noted that long-term recovery requires collective effort and that the agency will continue to work with stakeholders to ensure everyone’s safety in the area.

On his part, the member representing Ini/Ikono Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo commended the federal government for its response to the flood victims.

He expressed happiness that the relief items received from the FG are of the best quality and highest quantity ever sent to the region.

The lawmaker noted that the items would help to cushion the effect of the disaster.

Ukpng, however, urged his constituents to continue supporting the administration of President Bola Tinubu for more development in the country.

Mrs Ime Enang, a beneficiary commended the federal government for remembering the flood victims, who had lost hope, praying for God’s blessings upon them.

Another beneficiary, Mr Essien Udo, expressed delight over the gesture.

Udo said that he did not believe the federal government would remember them again.
