A 40-year-old man has been found dead in a guest house in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, following reports he had been with a woman who has since disappeared.
The deceased, identified only as Felix and understood to be from Cross River State, was discovered unresponsive at Diko Guest House on Azikoro Road, in the Ekeki district of the state capital, on Wednesday morning.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that a cleaner found the man naked in his room and immediately raised the alarm. The woman believed to have been with him before his death was nowhere to be found when the body was discovered.
Felix was well known locally as a mobile phone repairer, and news of his death drew crowds of traders from the nearby Seriake Dickson Shopping Complex, who gathered to express shock and sympathy.
Witnesses said several empty sachets of alcohol were found on the bedside table in the room before police officers arrived to secure and cordon off the scene.
Bayelsa State Police Command operatives have arrested three people in connection with the incident as investigations get under way: the guest house owner, and the cleaner who found the body.
The deceased’s brother, Dennis, was also briefly held for questioning after he was found in possession of Felix’s mobile phone. He told officers that a phone charging vendor had handed the device to him, after staff at the guest house gave it to them when they could not contact Felix. Police released him after accepting his account of events.
Some local residents noted that Felix had previously been involved in an incident that drew public attention in the community, though no further details have been confirmed.
One female trader at the complex said: “We are all devastated by this. He was a familiar face here. This should serve as a warning to everyone to avoid taking unnecessary risks that could cost them their lives.”
As of press time, police have not released an official statement confirming the cause of death, or provided any update on efforts to trace the missing woman.
