FRSC launches special crackdown on traffic offenders

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Akwa Ibom Sector Command, has launched Operation Shark Smile, a special enforcement exercise aimed at reducing road crashes and improving road safety across the state.

The Sector Commander, Mrs Felicia Kalu, announced the operation in a statement issued in Uyo on Monday.

Kalu described Operation Shark Smile as a strategic intervention initiated by FRSC Zone 6 to address the rising incidence of road traffic crashes and enforce compliance with traffic regulations.

She said the operation reflects the Corps’ commitment to restoring sanity on the roads by tackling traffic violations through targeted enforcement.

“The special enforcement operation will focus on critical traffic offences commonly committed in the state and will be carried out simultaneously across all Unit Commands.

“The operation will be conducted in collaboration with relevant sister security agencies, while offenders will be prosecuted immediately or given the option of paying the prescribed fines,” she said.

According to the sector commander, the operation will target offences including overloading, mixed loading, number plate violations, dangerous and reckless driving or riding, tyre violations, the use of mobile phones while driving, speed limit violations, and failure to use seat belts, among others.

Kalu said the special patrol became necessary to enhance the safety of all road users and deter motorists from engaging in reckless behaviour.

She added that the command would ensure effective route coverage and increase the visibility of FRSC personnel on major highways throughout the operation.

She urged motorists and other road users to obey traffic rules and avoid actions that could endanger their lives or those of others.

Kalu also advised members of the public to promptly report road crashes and other emergencies through the FRSC toll-free emergency line, 122.
