Former President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Udengs Eradiri, has urged the newly inaugurated leadership of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), led by High Chief Macdonald Igbadiowei, to rebuild unity and restore the organisation’s lost credibility.
Eradiri, a former Bayelsa State governorship candidate, said the new INC President faces the enormous task of repositioning the socio-cultural body and restoring its status as a respected institution.
He lamented that years of political interference had weakened and fragmented the organisation, stressing that the new leadership must prioritise reconciliation and unite aggrieved interests across the Ijaw nation.
According to him, Igbadiowei possesses the experience and political insight required to reposition the INC, citing his previous service in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly.
“He has a Herculean task ahead of him to reorganise the INC so that it becomes a respectable institution. There has been too much political interference that has led to its fragmentation,” Eradiri said.
He expressed confidence in Igbadiowei’s ability to provide purposeful leadership and steer the organisation towards progress.
The former IYC leader also pledged his support for the new executive council, assuring that critical stakeholders would work with the leadership to ensure its success.
Eradiri, who also served as Bayelsa State Commissioner for Youths and later Environment, called on the Bayelsa State Government to support the INC while avoiding undue interference in its affairs.
He stressed that although the INC should maintain a collaborative relationship with government, it must remain independent and not be subjected to state control.
“The INC cannot be under the whims and caprices of the state government. They must collaborate with each other,” he said.
He further advised the organisation to strengthen its financial base by engaging Ijaw businessmen and other stakeholders, noting that such support would help reposition the INC as a more responsible and respected body.
Eradiri wished Igbadiowei and his executive council a successful tenure as they begin the task of rebuilding the organisation.
