Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has matriculated 9,498 students for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The matriculation oath was administered to the freshers on Saturday in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of DELSU, Prof. Samuel Asagba, said the students were among tens of thousands of candidates who applied for admission into the university.
“I congratulate you not only on attaining another milestone in your academic pursuit, but also for successfully scaling the difficult hurdles of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and the Post-UTME screening exercise,” he said.
The ceremony marked the second matriculation exercise presided over by Prof. Asagba since his assumption of office on December 2, 2024, as the eighth substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university.
Asagba said the university had distinguished itself as a centre of academic excellence, adding that it had become an attractive destination for candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions.
He attributed the high demand for admission to the institution’s track record of maintaining a smooth and uninterrupted academic calendar over the years.
According to him, the university currently has 17 faculties with 109 academic programmes, in addition to an Institute of Education and a Business School.
The Vice-Chancellor said the management was putting measures in place to introduce more robust programmes to meet the academic needs of the present generation.
“The matriculation ceremony is a requirement in higher institutions, and the oath is an initiation into the intellectual community because it confers on you full rights of studentship. It is a universal academic tradition for any would-be scholar in the pursuit of higher education. Today, as you subscribe to this landmark academic tradition, you become formally admitted into DELSU,” he said.
Asagba noted that the university would need to admit more students to meet the aspirations of youths seeking higher education. However, he explained that admissions into Nigerian universities are regulated by the National Universities Commission in conjunction with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
He added that the institution, through its cardinal objectives, had continued to enhance capacity building, as well as intellectual and manpower development across various fields of human endeavour.
The Vice-Chancellor urged the students to maintain good conduct and refrain from activities that could undermine their academic pursuits.
He cautioned against examination malpractice, indecent dressing and other vices increasingly associated with undergraduates. He also warned against involvement in secret cults, stressing that cultism remains banned on campus.
“I urge you to shun all forms of vices that will jeopardise the successful completion of your studies and the attainment of your life dreams. Peace is paramount to meaningful academic pursuit, and it is on this premise that DELSU will continue to wage war against the nefarious activities of secret cults on campus,” he said.
He warned that anyone found engaging in cult-related activities would be expelled.
Asagba also praised Sheriff Oborevwori for what he described as significant progress in the overall development of the university.
One of the matriculating students, Miss Amos Fejiro, expressed joy at gaining admission and pledged to justify the confidence reposed in her.
