Court grants man alleged to steal N34,000 worth of vegetable bail

A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, has admitted a 50-year-old man, Daniel Emmanuel, who allegedly stole N34,000 worth of vegetable bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.
The matter was heard by Chief Magistrate Abdulhamid Lawal, who presided over the court.
Emmanuel, whose address was not given, was arraigned on one account of theft by the police.
The prosecution counsel, Insp. Bankole Olasunkanmi, told the hearing that the defendant committed the offence on December 30 around 1.30 am at Post Office area in Ado-Ekiti.
He alleged that the defendant stole one wheelbarrow filled with carrots, cucumbers, green beans, worth N34, 000 belonging to a trader, Abubakar Umaru.
According to Olasunkanmi, the offence contravened the provisions of Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.
He, however, asked the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the file and assemble his witnesses.
The defendant pleaded not guilty; his counsel, Mr Sunday Balogun, prayed the court to grant his client bail in the most liberal terms. Lawal adjourned the case till January 21, 2021 for hearing.
