Buhari to inaugurate E-Naira on Monday – CBN
The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari will unveil the e-Naira on Monday, October 25, 2021.
On September 30, the CBN suspended the launch of its digital currency, known as e-Naira.
The suspension of the launch was announced by CBN spokesman Osita Nwanisobi while speaking to newsmen in Abuja.
Nwanisobi said the roll out was suspended to allow other events billed for the Nigeria’s 61st Independence anniversary to take place.
A statement by Osita Nwanisobi on Saturday, noted that the e-Naira is now expected to be activated on Monday by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The CBN Director said that the launching would take place at the States House, Abuja.
According to him, the “e-Naira is a culmination of many years of research work by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN in advancing the boundaries of payments system to make financial transactions easier and seamless for every stratum of Nigerian society.
“Sequel to a series of engagements with most relevant stakeholders including the banking community, merchants, fintech operators and indeed, a cross section of Nigerians, the Central Bank designed the digital currency, which shall be activated on Monday, October 25, 2021.
“The e-Naira therefore marks a major step forward in the evolution of money and the CBN is committed to ensuring that the e-Naira, like the physical Naira, is accessible by everyone.”
