Police arrest armed suspect, recover firearm in Ikono

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a suspected hoodlum and recovered a locally made single-barrel firearm after responding to a distress call over an alleged threat to a family in Ikono Local Government Area.
The incident occurred at about 6:30pm on Monday, 17 August 2026, at Iton Odoro Village, where the police received information that an armed man was allegedly threatening members of a household.
Police operatives, working with members of the community, swiftly mobilised to the area, disarmed the suspect and took him into custody without any casualty.
According to the complainant, he was at home with his family when the suspect allegedly entered the compound through the back gate and threatened them with the locally made firearm.
The suspect, identified as Emmanuel Okoyo, remains in police custody, while the recovered firearm has been secured as an exhibit.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, speaking on behalf for the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, Baba Mohammed Azare, said the command commended members of the public for promptly alerting the police and praised the operatives for their swift and professional response.
Azare, however, reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property in the state.
He also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information about suspicious persons and criminal activities in their communities.
