A disturbing audio testimony circulating on social media has heightened concerns over commuter safety in Port Harcourt, with allegations that suspected kidnappers are disguising themselves as market women to lure unsuspecting passengers into commercial vehicles.

Although the claims have generated widespread public attention, authorities have yet to issue an official statement confirming the incident or the alleged arrest of the suspects.

Nevertheless, the account has renewed calls for increased vigilance among commuters and stronger security measures along major transport routes in Rivers State.

According to the audio recording, the victim, described as a widow, boarded what appeared to be a routine commercial bus along the Port Harcourt–Aba Expressway.

A Facebook user, Iniobong Isonguyo, in his FB page, stated that the vehicle reportedly looked no different from the many buses that transport traders daily between markets. Several female passengers, described as middle-aged women, were seated inside, while large baskets of fresh vegetables were tied to the roof, reinforcing the impression that the occupants were genuine traders travelling to market.

The woman allegedly believed she was boarding an ordinary passenger vehicle.

However, the recording claims that events took a frightening turn as the vehicle approached the Artillery area of Port Harcourt.

One of the female passengers allegedly produced a firearm and threatened the victim, warning her not to raise an alarm or attempt to escape.

According to the account, the driver, allegedly working with the women, diverted the vehicle from its normal route towards the Woji Bridge area, where the victim was reportedly robbed and held against her will.

The recording further alleges that the kidnappers confiscated her mobile phone and forced her to contact relatives and friends to raise ransom money.

The victim reportedly pleaded for mercy, explaining that she was a widow facing financial hardship. The appeal, according to the testimony, did not persuade the alleged abductors to release her.

The incident, if verified, highlights the increasingly sophisticated methods criminal gangs are said to be adopting to evade suspicion. Security experts have repeatedly warned that organised criminal groups often rely on deception, disguises and carefully planned operations to target unsuspecting members of the public.

The allegation that women posing as traders could be involved has particularly unsettled many residents because market women are traditionally regarded as familiar and trusted members of the community.

Reacting to the circulating account, one resident expressed shock at the allegations.

“These are mature women and mothers—the very people many would naturally trust. If the allegations are true, it shows that criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated in the methods they use to deceive innocent people,” the resident said.

The recording also claims that the suspected perpetrators were later apprehended. However, no official details have been released by the police or other security agencies to independently confirm the arrests or explain the circumstances surrounding them.

Security analysts caution that information circulating on social media should be treated carefully until verified by law enforcement agencies. They nevertheless acknowledge that the account serves as a reminder of the need for greater caution when using public transport.

Commuters are advised to pay close attention to the vehicles they board, avoid isolated pick-up points where possible, share travel details with trusted relatives or friends and immediately report suspicious activity to security agencies.

Residents have also called on the Rivers State Police Command to investigate the allegations thoroughly and clarify the facts surrounding the incident to prevent the spread of misinformation while reassuring the public.

As insecurity continues to evolve across parts of Nigeria, experts say public awareness, prompt reporting of suspicious behaviour and effective law enforcement remain essential in combating kidnapping and other organised crimes.

Whether or not every detail of the circulating account is ultimately substantiated, it has once again drawn attention to the importance of vigilance on the nation’s highways and the growing need for stronger security measures to protect commuters.
