A coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs) has defended the role of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Olohundare Moshood Jimoh in the investigation into the Ajiran deaths, while calling for greater transparency in the handling of the case.
The coalition said AIG Jimoh conducted the investigation professionally and urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation capable of undermining the ongoing judicial process.
The position was made known at a news conference in Lagos by the coalition’s spokesperson, Femi Lawnson, who addressed journalists on behalf of the participating organisations.
Lawnson, who is also the Coordinator of the Centre for Advocacy for Credible Leadership (CACL), said conflicting accounts of the case had distorted public understanding of the criminal proceedings.
He urged members of the public, particularly social media users, to base their comments on verified facts and respect the rule of law.
According to him, concerns over the pace of the investigation prompted the submission of a petition to the Inspector-General of Police in January 2026.
He said the Inspector-General subsequently ordered a review of the case, which was carried out by the then Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, now AIG Jimoh.
Lawnson described the review as structured, intelligence-led and supported by witness interviews, evidence gathering and collaboration among relevant law enforcement agencies.
“We have observed with concern the use of public platforms to circulate narratives capable of distorting public understanding of the case and undermining confidence in the judicial process.
“We are here to set the record straight, restore integrity to public discourse and advocate strict compliance with the rule of law,” he said.
He added that the arrest and prosecution of the suspects followed due legal process, including court procedures and collaboration with international law enforcement agencies where necessary.
Lawnson dismissed allegations of corruption, bias and abuse of office levelled against AIG Jimoh, describing them as baseless and unsupported by available evidence.
“We categorically reject allegations accusing AIG Moshood Jimoh of corruption, bias or abuse of office.
“After reviewing publicly available records and court proceedings, we consider such claims unsubstantiated and misleading,” he said.
The coalition commended the police leadership for its professionalism in handling what it described as a sensitive and high-profile case.
However, it urged the Inspector-General of Police to investigate reports of alleged unprofessional conduct by some police personnel connected with aspects of the investigation.
It said any officer found culpable should face appropriate disciplinary action in line with established procedures and called on the police authorities to ensure that officers involved in the case remain impartial throughout the judicial process.
The coalition also called on the Nigerian Correctional Service and the judiciary to provide clarity on the custodial status of the defendants and to ensure strict compliance with all court orders.
Lawnson stressed the need to shield the ongoing investigation and prosecution from undue influence and interference.
He further urged the media, civil society organisations and members of the public to exercise restraint when commenting on matters pending before the courts.
The coalition also appealed to relevant authorities to provide regular updates on the progress of the investigation and prosecution to promote transparency and public confidence. Lawnson expressed confidence that the courts would determine the case solely on the evidence presented and in accordance with due process.
