NEMA launches Operation Eagle Eye campaign to reduce crashes
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has launched Operation Eagle Eye in Uyo as part of efforts to ensure a crash-free yuletide in Akwa Ibom State.
The Head of NEMA’s Uyo Operations Office, Mrs Mmandu Aisuein, described the initiative as a special seasonal exercise aimed at reducing road traffic crashes during the festive period.
According to her, the operation focuses on sensitising motorists and commuters to the dangers of speeding and reckless driving, which are common causes of accidents during peak travel seasons.
Our Correspondent reports that the exercise, which commenced on Thursday at the NEMA Uyo Operations Office, extended to the Calabar–Itu Highway, a major traffic corridor linking Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.
Operation Eagle Eye is an annual NEMA initiative designed to complement the efforts of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other security and emergency response agencies through personnel deployment, inter-agency collaboration, and enhanced rapid-response mechanisms during periods of heavy travel.
“The exercise was officially flagged off at the NEMA Uyo Operations Office before the team moved to the Calabar–Itu Highway,” Aisuein said.
She explained that NEMA personnel worked closely with officials of the FRSC, Akwa Ibom State Command, to ease traffic congestion, coordinate traffic control, assist motorists, and ensure the free flow of vehicles along the busy route.
During the patrol, a road traffic crash involving a Toyota Sienna and a motorcycle was recorded, leaving one person with a severe leg injury.
Aisuein said NEMA personnel promptly administered first aid and evacuated the injured victim to the Itam Health Centre in Itu Local Government Area for further medical attention.
She added that Operation Eagle Eye would continue throughout the yuletide period to promote safer travel and ensure smooth traffic flow across the state.
