VC asks students to be dedicated, work hard

The Vice-Chancellor, Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Prof. Nse Essien has said the institution is equipped with facilities for students to learn and carry out academic research.

Prof. Essien who stated that with the available facilities, students can prepare themselves for a brighter future, urged them to be dedicated and work hard in their studies.

Speaking at the weekend in Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin local government area during the matriculation of 3, 236 students, Essien charged them to cooperate with appropriate authorities for the overall growth of the university.

He said since the inception of the institution in 2010, it has grown to become a leading partner in the educational development of the state and country.

“I welcome all our freshmen, especially to the 2023/2024 matriculation ceremony. I also want to congratulate you for the privilege of being admitted into our university, as one of the esteemed scholars.

“As you embark on this journey of studentship, you are admonished to take full advantage of the opportunity that this university has offered to ensure that you prepare yourself for a brighter future, through dedication to studies, commitment to hard work a d renewal of faith in God,” he stated.

Essien explained that the institution has the task of building a strong and virile nation, adding that the students have the responsibility of working assiduously and responsibly with the management to build a functional society that would guarantee the welfare of all.

The VC urged the new intakes to be law-abiding throughout their stay in the university, stressing that anti-social behaviours such as cultism, examination misconduct, indecent dressing, gender-based violence, etc., attract the penalty of expulsion.

“All students are expected to be law-abiding at all times. Anti-social activities in any form are prohibited. Students’ involvement in cultism, examination malpractice, indecent dressing, gender-based violence, etc., are prohibited in the University,” he warned.

He cautioned against using social media on matters concerning the university without approval from management and advised them to maintain a high level of discipline by following the appropriate line of communication with the university in academic and other issues of interest through the Office, Dean of Students Affairs.

He encouraged the students on the prompt registration of courses per semester and payment of appropriate fees, saying failure to register within the stipulated period would be an indication that the student has voluntarily withdrawn his or her studentship.

A breakdown of the 2023/2024 admission showed that 75 students were admitted into the Faculty of Agriculture, 537 in Arts; 534 in  Biological Sciences; 275 in Education, and 565 in Engineering. The Faculty of Management Sciences had 499 students; Physical Sciences had 293; Social Sciences had 458, while 36 students were admitted into the School of Continuing Education.
