Okonjo-Iweala pays first visit to Nigeria as WTO DG

Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Saturday visited Nigeria since she assumed office on March 1.
The WTO DG, who is on a week-long visit, was received on her arrival in Nigeria by the permanent secretary, Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Nasir Sani-Gwarzo.
Okonjo-Iweala, who spoke with journalists in Abuja, stated that her visit to Nigeria was to show appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for the support accorded her.
She noted that discussion on how Nigeria can leverage her position to benefit from trans-national trade formed part of her visit to the country.
Okonjo-Iweala is expected to meet Buhari, the presidential task force on COVID-19, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, among others, next week.
It will be recalled that Okonjo-Iweala, former finance minister in Nigeria, is the first woman and the first African to lead the WTO.
