Police arrest 60-year-old village chief, recover AK-47 rifle

Police in Akwa Ibom State have arrested a village head and recovered an AK-47 rifle in Mbo Local Government Area.

The suspect, identified as Chief Edet, a 60-year-old village head of Asik Ubofa Fishing Settlement in Effiat Clan, was apprehended following credible intelligence alleging he had an illegal firearm.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, directed operatives to carry out a coordinated operation to verify the intelligence and take appropriate action.

Police in Akwa Ibom State have arrested a village head and recovered an AK-47 rifle in Mbo Local Government Area.

The suspect, identified as Chief Edet, a 60-year-old village head of Asik Ubofa Fishing Settlement in Effiat Clan, was apprehended following credible intelligence alleging he had an illegal firearm.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, directed operatives to carry out a coordinated operation to verify the intelligence and take appropriate action.

Acting on the directive, detectives moved to the suspect’s residence on 24 March 2026 at about 10:15 a.m. During the operation, officers recovered one AK-47 rifle and two empty magazines. The suspect was arrested at the scene without any resistance.

Police said the suspect is currently in custody while a discreet investigation is underway to determine the source of the weapon, establish his intentions, and identify any possible accomplices.

The command reiterated its commitment to tackling the proliferation of illegal arms across the state. It warned individuals in possession of unlawful firearms to surrender them voluntarily or face the full weight of the law.

The police also commended members of the public for their continued support and urged them to keep providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
