The Deeper Life High School, Uyo has won the American Mathematics Competitions in Akwa Ibom State, which was organized by The Mathematical Association of America and IAGIFTED for secondary schools in Nigeria.
Students of Deeper Life High school floored other contenders from top schools in Akwa Ibom State to clinch 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th positions.
Two SS1 students; Jewel Udoudo and Angel Patrick took 1st and 2nd positions, respectively. A JSS3 student, Esther Ima John emerged 3rd while two other JSS3 students, Chinenye Chikere and Wobom Joshua Igo clinched 4th position.
Reacting to the academic exploit, the Principal of Deeper Life High School, Uyo, Mrs Eunice Ndulue expressed happiness over the success story of the school.
She stated that both teaching and non-teaching staffers of the school are poised to do more. “I am happy for this success. The students were celebrated in the assembly.
“This is an encouragement that our efforts in impacting knowledge are not in vain. By this success story, we are encouraged to do more for our students to make them become the best in all ramifications of life,” the principal said.
Giving insight into the examination, Principal Consultant for IAGIFTED, Professor Adewale Solarin said the idea behind the examination is to prepare Nigeria students to compete favourably with their peers all over the world.
“We have been coordinating AMC exams for nearly a decade now while Kangaroo Sans Frontiers joined three years ago. The exam is for all students in private and public schools from primary to secondary.
“Interestingly, this is not a conventional exam we give to our students in school. We go the extra mile to make it a duty that our students should be able to compete favourably with other students all over the world. The idea is to challenge the student’s intellect and give them a world view,” he said.
Speaking to newsmen, Head of Department, Mathematics of the school, Mr Morgan Emem and the Mathematics teacher that drilled the students for the competition, Mr Peter Ajeh, noted that it was an exciting moment coaching students for the competition.
He added that facilities provided by the school, willingness of the students to learn and the capacity of teachers coupled with strong determination to bring out excellence in the students, were the reasons for the attainment.
