U-20 World Cup: Flying Eagles captain assures of Nigeria battle against South Korea
The Flying Eagles are on Sunday, 4 June 2023 taking on their South Korean counterpart in the FIFA U-20 World Cup quarterfinal match at the Santiago del Estero Stadium.
Nigeria defeated hosts, Argentina 2-0 to book a place in the next round, and set up a clash against a hard-fighting South Korean team, which beat Ecuador 3-2 in the Round of 16.
This is the third time Nigeria and South Korea will be meeting at the U-20 level. The duel is scheduled for 6:30 pm Nigerian time.
The Flying Eagles led by Coach Ladan Bosso, have only lost a game, a 0-2 loss to Brazil in their third group match, and created one of the tournament’s biggest upsets by edging out hosts and six-time champions, Argentina.
Speaking to FIFA.com on the titanic clash, the team’s captain, Daniel Bameyi expressed confidence in his teammate’s ability to surmount the South Koreans if teamwork, determination, and discipline are on display, adding that the team can win the 2023 edition of the U-20 World Cup.
“Yeah. This is football. Everything can happen, and any team is beatable. As my coach always said, ‘We just have to be disciplined, dedicated, do our job, and concentrate.’ Let’s see how it goes, but I believe in this team. We can do it.
“First, there is no small team in the World Cup. Every team in this competition is good. You must respect every team. Then, any team in the knockout stage is obviously very good. I think the Koreans are a very good team. They have beaten other very good teams. I think they have outstanding players. We have a lot of respect for them,” Bameyi said.
