President Bola Tinubu has approved ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance for public service workers at all levels for six months, beginning in November 2026, to cushion the impact of rising living costs.

The approval was one of the resolutions reached on Tuesday in Abuja at a conciliation meeting between the Federal Government, led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The meeting followed renewed pressure from organised labour over the rising cost of living, workers’ welfare and outstanding agreements.

The government also approved the payment of outstanding peculiar allowance arrears, effective from 1 May 2026, in three equal monthly instalments beginning in November.

In addition, the Federal Government and the NLC agreed to constitute a Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee, which is expected to begin meetings immediately to determine the effective date for implementing a new national minimum wage.

The latest meeting followed an earlier conciliation session held on 22 October 2026 by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment to resolve disagreements between the government and organised labour.
