The Delta Political Vanguard’s grassroots mobilisation is strengthening political participation and engagement across Delta State, according to an All Progressives Congress chieftain, Dr Tonye Timi.
Timi, who spoke in an interview on Saturday, said effective democracy extended beyond elections to include the sustained participation of citizens and organised political groups in shaping the future of their communities and the state.
He described DPV as a significant grassroots political platform in Delta, citing its history of political mobilisation and engagement.
“DPV has demonstrated that grassroots organisation remains an important component of this process and has, over the years, established itself as a significant grassroots political platform in the political evolution of Delta,” he said.
Timi said the organisation’s political activities had been associated with the emergence of three successive governors of the state — Emmanuel Uduaghan, Ifeanyi Okowa and the incumbent, Sheriff Oborevwori.
He said DPV’s network across wards and communities had enabled it to connect political leadership with residents and facilitate grassroots political engagement.
His comments followed a September 30 meeting at which DPV adopted President Bola Tinubu, Governor Oborevwori and other APC candidates for the 2027 general elections. The group said it would take the resolution to its grassroots structures across Delta’s 25 local government areas.
Timi said the decision demonstrated the role organised political groups could play in electoral participation.
“I commend this commitment and believe that it deserves constructive support from the various political and support groups across Delta,” he said.
He called for coordination among political support groups in the state, saying their networks and grassroots structures could complement one another in promoting political participation.
Timi said the 2027 elections would be important to the political and developmental direction of Delta and Nigeria, urging citizens and political organisations to engage with the electoral process and articulate their expectations on governance and development.
He said he aligned himself with the resolutions reached at the DPV meeting and recognised the importance of the organisation’s decision to participate actively in the 2027 electoral process.
The APC chieftain urged political actors to place the interests of Delta and Nigeria above personal considerations.
He also called on them to work together, respect the rule of law and conduct their political activities peacefully and responsibly.
