Three persons were killed at the Ayeyoro area of Epe, Lagos State as Dangote truck reportedly suffered a brake failure.
The truck with Number Plate DCG-TM-028, was said have lost control while descending from Ita-Opo and collided with a tricycle with Number Plate AGL 442 QC and a stationary Toyota Camry.
It was learnt that the impact of the crash left the tricycle rider and the two students from Manpower Technical School dead on the scene.
Emergency responders from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), alongside personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), arrived early to secure the area, clear the wreckage, and alleviate the resulting traffic.
The bodies of the deceased were deposited in a mortuary at the Epe General Hospital.
A statement from Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, LASTMA General Manager emphasized the importance of vehicle maintenance to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“I implore all motorists to diligently ensure that their vehicles, particularly the braking systems, are in optimal condition before setting out on any journey.
“Regular maintenance checks are crucial to preventing such calamitous incidents and preserving lives,” he said.
The incident in Epe was part of a series of road accidents attributed to brake failure across Lagos.
In another occurrence, a crash at Ijaye inward Abule-Egba involved an LT Bus (FKJ 762 AD) and a Toyota Hiace Bus (MUS 154 YE).
LASTMA officers at the scene managed to rescue the driver and two passengers who suffered injuries and were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.
In a separate multi-vehicle collision at Tsunami Bridge, inward Ketu, three individuals—two females and one male—were rescued from a pile-up involving two Volkswagen commercial buses (LSD 483 CT & AGL 267) and a 10-tyre DAF truck.
The victims sustained various injuries and were also transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officers from Alapere Police Station provided security support during the rescue efforts.
LASTMA Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, reiterated the importance of vehicle safety and maintenance, noting that this tragic series of events highlights the urgent need for all vehicle owners to perform routine checks, particularly on brake systems.
