I have known Eka Uduak for almost two decades, and everybody in the neighborhood identifies her by that name. But recently, I decided to navigate the social norm by inquiring about her real name. She responded with a gorgeous smile..... perhaps it had been a long time since someone cared about knowing her real name. Eka Uduak, as she is fondly called, is a traditional woman who believes solely in the African culture of caring for her family, especially her children. Her situation is similar to that of thousands of women who have lost their names to their own children. Most people don't even know their real names, as they are identified by their children's names. Even my mother is identified as Eka Mercy or Eka David or Mma Nurse; people in the neighborhood don't know her real name, and she seems okay with it. Now I ask, how many of us in Akwa Ibom State know the real name of Eka Udo ( the owner of a popular restaurant in the State) ? However, I have a different ideology about this traditional way of identifying women with their first or second child. Women sacrifice so much in their matrimonial homes, and I believe they should at least have the right to be called by their first names. I believe it is more honourable. I wouldn't want to be identified by my first or second child's name; I would gladly not respond to such a name. I wouldn't love to be identified as Eka Michael or Eka Glory or Eka Ikwo... Auntie Mercy or Madam Mercy is just fine. Unfortunately, most of these women's real names will only be known at their funeral ceremonies... So I appeal, get to know that woman's real name and watch her smile after the kind gesture... This is Justice For the Women
